I would like any advice someone may have about fonts in X11. I have
used fink to install openoffice and abiword, but I can't seem to get
reasonable font rendering/smoothing. This is the same problem I
always had in unix/linux GUIs and why I came back to the Mac OS in the
end. Am I missing some way to increase the onscreen resolution of the
fonts to make them appear smoother?
Nope, don't think so - font support is quite good with KDE3 (compiled
against Xft) and GNOME2 (currently using freetype2 since Xft2 is only
available in snapshots from XFree86), but old applications - you are
out of luck.
There is a hack for GTK1 apps but it relies on dynamically preloading
libraries, so would be rather hard to port to Darwin.. and probably not
worth it. The name even eludes me at the moment :p
With Open Office it's an interesting case: Red Hat managed to make
theirs look good but I don't know if it's a trivial configuration
change or a more serious undertaking. Abiword ... persuade them to
start building Gtk2 snapshots for OS X?
I'm praying for a quick release of XFree86 4.3 - not really looking
forward to recompiling apps for fontconfig/Xft2 support, but ah well. A
small price to pay..
