X11 dies while using color sliders

I just hit an odd problem. I was trying to choose a different color in
System Preferences -> General -> Highlight Color -> Other... using the
HSB sliders. When I started to drag the "Hue" slider, X11 died with
this console message:
Feb 18 20:16:23 localhost /Applications/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11: kCGErrorFailure : OFARegisterStrike failed: error 268435471.
and I got a cute crash log for Xquartz.
The bad news is that I now have a nasty 1-2 second delay between me
dragging the slider and the Aqua widget responding.
Even worse, I now have a zombied X11 process that won't die, and its
parent is Process 0.
$ ps -alxw | grep X11
UID PID PPID CPU PRI NI VSZ RSS WCHAN STAT TT TIME COMMAND
0 8081 0 0 0 0 0 0 - Z con- 0:00.00 (X11)
I haven't logged out or restarted yet. And ideally, I'd rather not.
