console mode.
Quartz-wm doesn't require Finder to be running does it?

No. I wasn't going to use the Quartz-WM I was going to use the
"Enlightenment" window manager.
I'm sure that Quartz-WM doesn't require the Finder, but it does require
the Quartz Window Server to be running.
If you log in as ">console" it stops the Quartz Window Server which,
Haroon was pointing out, is required for X11 to operate on Mac OS X.
If this were a really sticking point for me, I could un-install Apple's
X11 and intall XFree86 but then my X windows applications wouldn't
benefit from the Quartz (Quartz Extreme) optimizations in the Apple
implementation.
Since it was all more of an experiment just to learn a bit more about X
Windows... it's not _that_ important to me :-)
