All you really need to is issue the chpass command. The NetInfo

the /etc/passwd file is not consulted in favor of the NetInfo database
so having the change reflected in that file is moot.

Well, when I tried just the chpass command, it didn't change my shell
in NetInfo (so it didn't *actually* change my shell) - but it changed
the values in /etc/passwd. But chpass may have been updated from 10.2.8
to 10.3 (I'm using 10.2.8).
The instructions for /etc/passwd were more for the sake of people who
might look in there and get confused, or if the system was reconfigured
to consult /etc/passwd first. Having different values in different
locations is a *bad thing*.
