I've got a few programs running under X but I have not been using
fink. Like the original poster I've had trouble getting GRASS to work
(similar problems), it's been a back-burner problem but I now have a
reason to actually try and get it to work. So my question is this: can I
install fink and still have other programs like GIMP and OpenOffice work
as they are without having to jump through a whole new set of hoops
re-installing them or whatever via fink?
There should be no problem with Openoffice. With Gimp, it depends how
you installed it. Whereas Fink is as non-intrusive as possible, other
package systems are often not so fussy. In particular MacGIMP is known
for rather unscrupulous behavior. Older versions of MacGIMP hijacked
Fink's file layout and installed into /sw, so that by running Fink's
binary installer you destroyed the macGIMP installation and vice versa.
It looks like the new version of MacGIMP hijacks Opendarwin's directory
layout instead, installing into /opt, so Fink should be safe to install.
Anyway, Fink contains anything you have from MacGIMP, minus the fees.
