I don't know about the perl add-ons, nor do I understand how xplanet
works, but I found that, as weird as it sounds, it draws its root image
best when it is executed while X11 is *not* running at all, or when
DIPLAY is not set. It then seems to draw directly into the Apple desktop
background image.
