You need to work in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
I needed the MS Trebuchet font so I copied trebuc.ttf trebucbd.ttf
trebucbi.ttf and trebucit.ttf to the folder above.
Next you need to edit fonts.dir, the number on the first line is the
number of fonts in the file, as I added the lines below:-
trebuc.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
trebuc.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-15
trebucit.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
trebucit.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-15
trebucbi.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
trebucbi.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-15
trebucbd.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-bold-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1
trebucbd.ttf -microsoft-Trebuchet
MS-bold-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-15
So being 8 lines I added 8 to the number and appended the lines above
to that file.
fonts.scale works the same way, do the same to this file.
Restart X11 and you should be OK.
Probably best to back-up those file first ;-)
Regards, Rob.

How to you add a TrueType font to Apple's X11 X server?
I have a font which is a plain .ttf, not a .dfont.
What I'd really like to do is just install the font so that OS X
knows about it and have X11 automatically find it.
