Thanks.
I did precisely what you suggest last evening and got EVERYTHING
working WITHOUT loading KDE as WM. Thanks a lot!

Wow.
The KDE Desktop came up, though the mouse and keyboard did NOT work
from the Mac. I had to terminate the X11 Session prior to logging
out of the system. Any ideas as to how to get the keyboard and mouse
to work?
FWIW, I'll add to your confusion if I can...;)
I use the following to connect over the Internet from my Powerbook to
a SUSE 9.x server I maintain -
First I bring up xterm (part of OSX's X windows package)
then I type:
ssh -l username -X -C 99.999.99.999
(substitute your machine's ip or hostname for all those 9's)
I have no trouble using mouse and keyboard with X apps. I can't speak
for KDE per se, as I just run whatever app I need directly since KDE
would just waste bandwidth over a remote connection.
I suggest that you use ssh, not rlogin, unless you are on a closed net
without security concerns.
One note - if you do this from terminal instead of xterm it will not
work properly. I know, I made that mistake at first.
