Ben,
I would urge Apple to release the new version of X11 for Leopard as soon as possible. The version that came with the initial release of Leopard was absolutely shameful. Having non-functioning X11 may turn developers, such as MathWorks, away from Mac OS X platform as they have done already before. Working X11 is absolutely crucial for the scientific community, which ports many Solaris and Linux applications.

>Nah, there's not a whole lot to say. You should only read good things into my recent relative silence on this list. :) I'm closely following development on
xquartz.macosforge.net, and we've already publicly stated that we hope to get an update pushed out through an official channel. Policy dictates I not say much more than that, but generally speaking:
When Apple releases updates for open-source software shipped with Mac OS X, they pick the version that seems most suitable (balancing the needs of various users with the resources available, etc), and go with that. I think that the work that Jeremy has done would already be a great help to all users of
X11.app on Leopard, and I've been following the development of xquartz-server-1.2 (or is it 1.3?) closely to minimize the effort required on our end to make Xquartz suitable for release in a general >update. In other words, keep up the good work, and we'll do what we can.

That's completely fine by me (in a selfish sense I guess). However, it might be nice to get some idea from e.g. Ben about any potential minimum requirements before such an event is even considered by Apple (and that may subsequently influence the on-going development here). In the perfect world, what is developed here would be in a state such that the meat of the X11 installer is Apple-ready, and that Apple could take a 'snapshot' at any time they deemed right, perform their own rigorous quality control and then finally release it.
But that's in the perfect world :-)...

We may, or we may not, be, but you'll never hear anything about it on this list until the release is out. That's just how Apple works. So relax and enjoy the privileged access you have to the early and excellent work of the people on this list. :)

Hi Guys,
So are we getting any closer to a point where a line can be drawn in the sand for an "official" update from Apple? I can't imagine how the regular Leopard X11 users out there (those not on this list) have been living all this time, and I can certainly imagine their delight in getting something so very significantly better and not all broken. There will always be bugs tantalizingly close to completion that would delay fixing a date, but like my boss says, there's nothing like a deadline to motivate people...
