No, the system xinitrc is in /usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit
I suspect your old Tiger system xinitrc is still there and is
starting xterm.

ok -- I see it there. Mine ends like this:
twm &
xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 &
exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login
mmm help me understand: if that is being used when X11 is invoked why
doesnt starting any X app start also start an xterm?
