Hello all
I am new to the Mac, but have some working experience with UNIX and
X-terminal applications.
At this moment, I am attempting to install WireShark in my iMac. This is
based on the instructions at the "http://www.finkconsulting.com/page7.php"
site. From this site, there is an indication that a pre-requirement for
WireShark installation is that X11 is available in the station already.
In order to verify installation of X11, the "X11.app" file is to be searched
at the "/applications/utilities/" directory. I did not find the file there.
Indeed, I could not find it in the station with the "find / -name X11
-print" command either.
I downloaded the X11 application (update) from the
"http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11update2006113.html" link, and
execution of the installation file yielded a "Alert - This system does not
need this update." response. I also tried to download the X11 ("original")
application from the
"http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html" link.
Installation attempt yielded a "You cannot install X11 in this volume.
Newer Software already exists in your computer." response. So... in
summary, I cannot install an old X11 version or an update (I infer that this
is because the system apparently has the latest version of X11), but the
software is nowhere to be found (at least, by me).
I never saw a Mac OS installation disk. The station came from its box, and
the only disk install I applied was Microsoft Office. Then, I can't know
for certain if "X11.app" was installed from disk (I sincerely doubt it).
Would you have any recommendations on what to do? Is there a way to
uninstall or unconfigure what the machine identifies as a "working" copy of
"X11.app" so that the new install can take place. By the way, is there an
"uninstall" application at the Mac, just as MS Windows systems have?
Regards,
Ferdinand
