Ahhh! It all becomes clear. And _that's_ why I'm not seeing so much
benefit. For some reason, I had an "export DISPLAY=:0.0" in
my .bash_profile; I'm guessing as the side-effect of some faffing
around trying to get something to work ages ago.
I think things might work better for me now I've taken it out.
