Actually, I don't think either of us was nit-pickingly correct. ":0"
is really shorthand for whatever transport to the local machine's X11
server that Xlib thinks is the best one (usually the fastest one, and
on Unix platforms, as you say, usually a unix socket). So the Apple
Xlib could do whatever's best for the platform when confronted with
that situation.
It would sure be nice if Apple's X11 server did something unsurprising
when the user set the DISPLAY environment variable to ":0".
