Many thanks to Tim Baur for his persistence in figuring out the
procedure for reverting to Tiger's X11 and to Aaron for the fine write-
up on the minimal set of changes actually required. I wish I'd jumped
to the end of the thread rather than following along step-by-step and
making some of the same mistakes!
I am dismayed that Apple has released such a flawed version of X with
Leopard. If it wasn't ready they should have bitten the bullet and
stuck with the proven version from Tiger while they worked on the new
code base. It is understandable that some features may take more time
to implement than their schedule allowed.
That said, I am shocked that they released yet another version of X
with the dread Yellow Cursor, which has been a known issue with a
community-provided solution since February 2006. A week-long
conversation with the Apple X team last November ended in their
assertion that the problem could not be reproduced in their lab so the
trivial change was not implemented.
Another issue with the Leopard version of X11.app that I have not seen
mentioned is the reduced functionality of the customizable
"Applications" menu. In Tiger I have a rich set of commands that I
use to launch sessions on my lab machines with a differently colored
xterm for each machine so I can easily find the window I want. A
typical command looks like:
uxterm -sb -geometry 80x50+0+0 -sl 1000 -bg lightsteelblue3 -e ssh -
L8086:localhost:8086 lab1
Under Tiger it looks like only commands with no options are supported,
such as their examples of "xman" and "xlogo". I hope that is an
oversight and will be fixed in the next release of X11.
