I share your disappointment that some things are broken, but I think
you're overstating the problem. The major issues identified so far:

1) No way to emulate middle-button clicks (at least on MacBook Pros,
possibly other single-pointer-button environments)
2) Yellow cursor on Intel xterms
3) X doesn't work with Spaces
4) The Applications menu in X11.app doesn't allow arguments
5) No UTF-8/locale support in xterm, and no uxterm supplied.

Of these, I think the odd numbers are the biggest problems. (4) has
an easy workaround (use shell scripts for the menu items), but (1)
doesn't - unless you're willing to carry an external mouse around with
you everywhere you take your MacBook - and neither does (3).

As you noted, (2) is not a new bug; it's also present in X11 on
Tiger, unless you applied an unsupported third-party patch. But when
you say this:

I begin to wonder if you read the messages on this list rather than
treating it as write-only. We have confirmation from the responsible
developer at Apple that the yellow cursor bug had been fixed
internally in the X11R6 codebase, so it's not like they're disavowing
it. They had a regression when they switched to R7, which is
unfortunate, but I don't think it ranks as "shocking".

Odd, because it's been mentioned multiple times, and we even got
confirmation from that same developer I mentioned that it's a bug, not
an intended functionality change. And as I said above, it's easily
worked around - although the lack of uxterm makes your particular
example problematic.
