You could check if the program even accesses the file. This is most
easily done by running this in a terminal:
ls -lu .gtkrc-2.0
It shows the last access time with a resolution of one minute, so make
sure to wait at least a minute since the last access time before
running gnucash, then check it again.
For a bigger sledgehammer, run this in a terminal window:
sudo filebyproc.d | grep -i gnucash
Then once that is running, start gnucash again. You should get a list
of all the files it tried to open in the terminal window. Hit
Control-C in the terminal to stop the listing. This should reveal the
location of any configuration file it tries to open. It will also list
all the libraries it uses, so the list can be long-ish.
