This one jumps out at me in a big way. What options did you use when
building it? In particular, what directory did you set as the prefix?
I always use --prefix=/usr/local as I want to keep anything installed
separated from the core system, but on this occasion I MAY have
omitted to pass this option.
What should be the correct way?
/usr/local should be fine... but I'd still recommend using MacPorts
instead.
