When I get a compiler warning, the build commands (their toolbar buttons and their menu items) are disabled, and I can't figure out how to re-enable them without closing and re-opening the project. Advice welcome.

I've filed a bug on this behavior which depends on the preference you've set for the Errors & Warnings SmartGroup. Try changing those, some combinations should avoid the problem.
