It turns out most was strippable symbols - selecting "Deployment postprocessing" reduces it to 655 kilobytes - still a large increase over CodeWarrior's 40k, but no longer swamping the rest of the executable.

Presumably I've got the wrong value for some build setting, but I can't work out what. I've looked for __LINKEDIT and LINKEDIT in the documentation but could not see anything obvious.
