Taking the stand that all compiler/linker/tool settings HAVE to have associated UI is just not feasible, there are just too many flags and settings out there.

Really? How many is too many? 200? 500? 5000?

The UI in Xcode seems very flexible and able to accommodate a *lot* of settings. Put them in a group "Rare/Infrequently Used" or something. You have the nice search feature, etc. Just seems like Xcode is designed to handles lots of flags and settings.

It would certainly make my life easier. I'd surprised if I was the only one.

Go look at the gcc documentation and peruse all the possible flags. There are A LOT. Many, many more than what CodeWarrior provided access to. Are we finished exposing new settings in the UI and/or improving the custom UI for build settings? No, the current direction is to expose those settings that are commonly used or important and then respond to requests for other settings as they come in.

We do try to make the commonly use or important settings visible in the UI. In the case above, the desire was to have the behavior on by default (and therefore not need custom UI for the setting), but we didn't get there for Xcode 2.1.

Regardless, I could see people wanting the opposite behavior, so it'd seem to be it should be visible in the UI.

I feel all too often like I'm fumbling in the dark with Xcode trying to hunt down some obscure flag or setting that is not in the UI. Makes me uncomfortable. Less so today than with 1.5 and earlier. But nonetheless it's one thing that doesn't feel good about Xcode.

The problem of "how do I do X?" is something that we are always working to improve. Providing a set of searchable settings is a partial solution, but it doesn't help when you don't know how to describe what you are looking for. To tackle these sorts of issues, we have some ideas about guided UI to help the user, but feedback from users about what areas of the build settings are not documented/ exposed sufficiently would be greatly appreciated.
