It seems like it must be a problem with a library supplied with XCode/gcc.
I just successfully built a universal binary using the Debug configuration.

Does you debug configuration have zero link enabled? If so they it isn't linking so you wont see this missing symbol error.

Note that the problem is with the Intel build. This is being done on a dual G5.
