As others have basically said, Xcode is an optional
install available to all Mac OS X users, and any
given version of Xcode is tied to the version of
Mac OS X for which it was released...
In both cases you really want to use the most
recent versions you can.
Ah, an excuse to ask a question that's been tweaking me.
How does one determine "the most recent versions you can"
install and use? Is there a table published somewhere?
Is there a tool which will generate a report
It will say that on the ADC download site. But it's very simple:
< 10.2: No Xcode for you, sorry. Use ProjectBuilder, the ancestor of
Xcode.
10.3: Xcode 1.5
10.4: Xcode 2.4.1
All signs point towards Xcode 3.0 requiring 10.5.
Save yourself a lot of headaches by not using earlier versions of
Xcode, like 1.0 or 2.1.
