No, there's no public documentation from Apple. You're really on your
own in this terrain, until Apple decides to open these APIs up (if
they ever will). As I see it, a lot of the Xcode internals are
changing from one release to another, so this tedious way is the only
way to get support for third-party tools at the moment.
My advice is to not trouble yourself with the syntax highlighter too
much, that's serious work to try to figure out what happens inside of
that. I tried but gave up, simply because it wasn't worth the
trouble. It looks like it's not meant to extend in this way, i.e. I
assume you need knowledge of the actual code to implement wacky
stuff, which is understandable after all.
I'm content that ANTLR works as a compiler and that I get errors and
warnings flagged correctly. That's definitely an improvement over
using the command line all the time. :)
