It seems that everything is OK from SVN's point of view after importing into SVN, I just don't understand the error from XCode when "Commit Entire Project". The error seems to indicate that I have not set up something SVN calls a "working copy directory".

This sounds like people have been saying.

ORIG_DIR -> SVN

gives you a copy of ORIG_DIR in the repository. But there is nothing on your hard disk that is connected to the repository. As far as Subversion is concerned, it's a coincidence that your hard disk happens to match. You need to do

SVN -> WORKING_DIR

in order to get a working copy. This *is* connected to the repository (via hidden folders). And you can check in and out.
