Instruments' ObjectAlloc: Can identify objects still living?

  • Subject: Instruments' ObjectAlloc: Can identify objects still living?

I'm working on a background application which should periodically perform work and then return to an idle state, consuming minimal memory.

Viewing in ObjectAlloc, with option "Created & Still Living", I see that when it launches, about 1 MB of memory is allocated. While doing its work, it peaks at about 14 MB, then drops back down to about 3 MB.

But I believe that it should drop back down to the original 1 MB, and would like to identify the 2 MB which is being retained. However, when I set the Inspection Range to begin and end in the after-work idle area where 3 MB is allocated, the Detail pane is empty. Apparently it's showing me the objects allocated during that period, which is none.

Is there a way to identify the objects that are still living?

I did read the "Instruments User Guide"!

Sincerely,

Jerry Krinock
