The exciting conclusion: I forgot that at the same time as switching xcode to 3.1.3, I changed it to run in 64-bit as opposed to 32-bit (in the .app info pane). Apparently that's what broke everything. Switching back to 32-bit, I can see all the bonjour discovered build hosts, and can connect to the ones with the same versions of xcode.

1. If you switch the master machine back to 64-bit Xcode, and also switch one of the remotes to 64-bit Xcode, does that cause the master to see the 64-bit distcc remote? If not, that seems like a bug to me, because then there's no way for 64-bit Xcode to use distcc.

2. If the 64-bit master can only use 64-bit remotes, then frankly, that also seems like a bug to me. If it's not a bug, and merely an anti-feature or a restriction, then it ought to be documented.

So either way, please file a bug-report on this: either a functional bug (64-bit Xcode can't use distcc), or a documentation bug (64-bit Xcode can only use remotes that are also running 64-bit).

Note: Xcode 3.1.3 (and all Xcode 3.1.* versions) is not officially supported to run in 64-bit mode. You should leave it in 32-bit mode, and only file bugs on behavior you see in 32-bit mode.
