In my Xcode (3.1.3) this works by clicking the left-arrow right
above the editor control. It only works if the definition is not in
the current file, though.
It is this exception that Bob is complaining about. It is not
uncommon to jump around within the current file.

I'm pretty sure I didn't change any settings (or it was very long
ago in which case I don't remember) for this to work (I'm using the
Default layout).
Is this not what you're after?
