Yep.
I am interested in using TTS for my application, but are there any
international voices out there that will work with the Speech
Manager API (i.e. can be selectable in the Speech System Pref Pane)?
I would need them to recognize/understand international text that is
French, Spanish, UK English, German, Italian, Japanese, and/or
Portuguese? Would these voices (if they exist) be ones Apple
provides or 3rd parties?
3rd party for now. If you feel Apple should provide them write a bug
report (feature request). The more people tell them (with good
arguments) the more likely it will happen some day.
Another possible solution would be for us to license a 3rd-party TTS
engine that would have these international voices.
Any info or a direction in which to look would be helpful and appreciated.
For now you will have to license third party voices. The only ones I
know of for Mac OS X are those of Acapela. They are working on
partial Speech Manager support (and the last version they sent me
finally seems to work ok), but they also have their own stable API.
In either case you would have to license the voices for your app and
they will only work in your app. The voices are not cheap. They have
quite a few languages, but no Japanese. Contact me off-list if you
want me to put you in touch with the right person there.
