And, by the way, I didn't realize that those are NSStatusItems. I've always
referred to them as "menu extras." I thought you were talking about the kind
of NSStatusItem that appears in the bottom margin of some applications'
document windows (that's why I asked you to point me to some common
applications that have them -- I don't seem to be able to find one).
I suppose the private menu extras in the menu bar are also NSStatusItems. So
you can probably get notifications for them by registering the application
that owns each of them for the AXMenuOpened notification. But, as you say,
there may be some issues regarding whether the application is running.
