MenuExtras are a private only thing for Apple, we don't support them outside
of Apple at this time. That being said there are haxies around that enable
people to write them, or people write NSStatusItems. It is different per
class of thing.
On way to tell is to hit command-shift-4, then space then drag over the
items in the menu. All the menuextras are in on window, each NSStatusItem
is in a separate window.
These are all implementation details and could change at any time.
