Is there really no way to post announcements to VoiceOver in OSX?

Hi,
Looking through NSNotifications options at https://developer.apple.com/library/Mac/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/Accessibility/cocoaAXNotifications/cocoaAXnotifications.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/20001061-CJBBDEAD, I do not see a way to post announcements to VOiceOver the way it can be done in iOS accessibility API. Is this really so? Is there something I am missing?
