The only way that I’ve ever been able to get VoiceOver to say anything was through Applescript. That approach has all sorts of problems, with one of the more annoying being that the request to speak immediately dumps the speech buffer before speaking. Using this approach in your app without a lot of careful thought will have your users upset with you due to your spoken messages interrupting their speech.
