A way to tweak pronunciation of accessibility labels & friends?

Hi,

is there a way to tweak pronunciation of accessibility labels, custom action names etc.?

E.g. if a label contains word “read” meaning the past participle pronounced /red/ (like an email that "is read” or “is unread”) and not the infinitive or imperative form pronounced /riːd/, VoiceOver pronounces it as the infinitive form nonetheless. Is there a way to tell VoiceOver to pronounce a part of a word in a certain way, perhaps with some attributed string attribute? (Btw. Mail.app has this problem too when announcing the “Mark read” action name).

Tweaking the accessibility label itself to e.g. literally include “red” is an unacceptable workaround as that would ruin the braille experience (and the whole point of braille is to know exactly how a thing is written), it would also ruin the spelling experience using Characters rotor item.

Anyway thinking about it, a proper solution to this problem would need to work robustly with localization (i.e. a translator for some language would need to be able to tweak the pronunciation of a translated string with a change only to the strings/translation file and without any change in code), which would not be trivial as it would probably require some changes to the translation file format and to Foundation/UIKit.

If there is not a way to tweak the pronunciation of accessibility labels, I guess I should file a rdar?

Thanks,
Boris
