Given that braille and the punctuation feature works better when including a newline, I agree that including it in AXRangeForLine is the better choice. Good catch!
Mail (via WebKit) and Pages use their own text engines, which is why you’re seeing the difference. It’s worth filing a bug about WebKit and iWork not having newlines in the AXRangeForLine.
