Serves me right. I had looked at the ASLG (correct for AS 1.3.7/OS 8.6)

and there wasn't any "with properties" parameter. I didn't look in the

Finder dictionary (AS 1.4.1/OS 9.0.4), where it is there as clear as day.

And the Finder Guide, which is ancient (copyright 1994 - it doesn't even say
which AS or OS version it's meant to apply to).

Well, no. Here's the ancient Finder Guide, p.35:
Objects of class Application File, Disk, and Folder can also be identified
by ID. The ID in each case consists of the application file9s creator type
(as a string), the disk9s ID, and the folder9s folder ID, respectively.
Puzzling, but true.
Peter, your comments are otherwise very thoughtful and well-put.
Now that I know that the "with properties" parameter of the Finder's OS 9
'open' command means:
'the initial values for the properties, to be included with the open command
sent to the application that opens the direct object'
--[Finder Dictionary]
thus, apparently, properties of the running application [as what class?]
when opened, I still don't understand why 'visible:false' turns out to mean
'background', not 'hidden'.
It's all still quite peculiar.
