script compiled on 9.04 gives -43 (file not found) on 8.6

I recently released a new version of IRCmagic, a set of scripts that enhance
the chat client Ircle. This latest version is compiled on OS 9.04 -
previous versions were compiled on OS 8.6 and 9.0. To my dismay, I just
found that the script now fails to launch on OS 8.6 due to the following
error:

Could not run the script "IRCmagic" because of a disk error -43".

This same script runs fine on OS 9.04.

When this script is compiled on 8.6 with no source code changes
what-so-ever, the script runs just fine on 8.6 and OS 9.

I've seen others report this problem in the past here on the Applescript
list. Bill Cheeseman reported the problem on Sat, 08 Apr 2000 18:03:44
-0400 Subject: "File doesn't exist -43 ???". I would like to know, has
anyone else run into this problem, and has anyone figured out the cause of
it, or a solution?

It reflects badly on me when customers attempt to run my software and get
this error. I should have tested it on 8.6 just to be sure. I usually do;
but this time I didn't. Nevertheless, it's disturbing to me that a script
compiled on 8.6 runs fine, but the same exact script compiled on 9.04 fails.
Not only does it fail, it gives no indication of how I might fix the
problem, or even a hint as to what caused the problem in the first place.

For now I'll keep a machine running 8.6 and use it to compile my script for
future releases.

I would like to hear from someone at Apple about this problem, and would be
very cooperative in helping them figure it out in any way I can.
