I'm not going to fire up other Macs to check the other OS versions
at this time of night (it's late out here in the middle of the
Atlantic ocean), but I'm pretty sure that the ability to set files as
"locked" was buggered in 8.6. Someone else who has a better memory
should reply. The other stuff in the script should have worked
through all versions you mentioned.

This brings up an issue I have been wanting to ask about.
Using a G3/OS8.6 mac, I am preparing some simple scripts for an older
mac running OS 8.1 and have been worried about backwards
compatibility issues. I seem to recall that someone had success with
simply installing current versions of the Applescript Extension into
an older (but still AS-capable) system.
It strikes me that this could be suicidal, yet if it worked, it would
eliminate a lot of heartburn.
For example, my development OS8.6 AS version is 1.3.7 (ASLib version 1.2.2)
What havoc might I wreak by simply replacing the OS8.1 AS components
(AS v 1.1.2; ASLib v 1.2.2) with the more recent OS 8.6 versions?
Could this enhance compatibility? Or simply guarantee instability or
worse?
I am aware, of course, that the final arbiter is "try it and see",
but I was hoping some kind soul might comment on the general
advisability of such an attempt.
The natural extensions of this process:
AS OS 9.x -> OS 8.6?
AS OS 9.x -> OS 8.1?
