Paul, I don't know how it works, but John Carlsen's archive scripts run FMP
in the background very well! It's one of their claims to fame; you can start
up archiving and go do something else while things get archived in FMP. I
believe the key is (and I'm guessing a bit) that the script in question is
saved as an application, and the FMP script that invokes it does by sending
the RUN apple event to the script applet. Of course, the applet comes to the
foreground to run. Once it starts, though, you can switch to another
application, and records continue to get added to the FMP database in the
background. In fact, for some odd reason John could explain were he
recovered from his stroke, the script runs faster with FMP in the background
than with it in the foreground.
I may be completely off base, but you might want to check his scripts to see
if they do anything out of the ordinary. I don't think so. Or, just try your
script as an applet and see what happens.

If anyone (Shane Stanley?) knows a way to get FMP to work in the background

from an applescript, we'd all appreciate knowing about it.
