Mark,

I'm a total ignoramous when it comes to such matters, but as I seem to
have a similar setup, heres my two-cents:

I have an 8-port hub (Farallon starlet) my uplink port IS connected to
the modem. This works beautifully (all computers can connect to the
internet (theortically NOT simultaneously - tho I've never tested)

MY GUESS as to WHY YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS, YMMV:
The Farallon manual specifically states that you can only use 7 of the
possible standard ports if the uplink port is in use (no mention as to
specific ports, just overall total). If you're attempting to use all 8
ports, PLUS the uplink port my guess is that may be your problem.

Some additional background should it matter:
M service is RoadRunner (TimeWarner), On the main machine (a PPC 9500)
I'm running OS 8.51 (the 2 connected computers are running OS 9.04, and
8.1)

(I also have various printers (assorted protocols) connected. I did not
set up TCP at all in the connected machines!! I'd accidentally clicked a
link on my iMac, and poof I was connected -- go figure -- it's magic to
me)

The ONLY TCP/IP settings I needed on the main computer:
Connect via: "Ethernet"
Configure: "Using DHCP Server"
everything else is left blank.
(I suspect you'd need to do more if your service uses static ips)

My Remote access software is completely disabled -- tho I doubt that
matters.

hope this helps,
xandra
