i was struck particularly by the first word of the response.

Dear Marc,
Alas I am not sure that I am going to prove any more insightful on this
because we have not, up this point, isolated what is behind this.
It seems to crop up when PS files are printed to a volume which is not the
start up volume of the Mac in question. However there are people who have
not run into this problem even when printing to a mounted volume across a
network. The only thing that seems to have alleviated it - and I must
emphasize that this is anecdotal only - is to set up to print the PS files
to the root level of the start up drive and then use a small finder script
to round up the files and move them to a folder and then move the folder to
which ever location you originally intended.
I wish I could be more specific about what is causing this but I cannot. In
the few cases where we have duplicated this sporadic problem the above
solution worked around it.
I do hope that helps.
