I never see the change made to the other folder either. As you will note the

Hmm, I've never tried NOT setting the startup system when the control
panel opens. I'll try that next time I reboot. It *does* pause for
input, however, so I can't just let the script continue.
I also use Conflict Catcher (v8.0.8) and it hasn't caused any complications
here.
I didn't mean the CC causes complications, just that there is other
material in my script which is not relevant to Startup Disk.
(Specifically, I use this script as a "Shutdown Item" which is
usually inactive, but which is part of the CC extension set I use for
OS X/Classic. If I want to reboot into X, I choose the "Classic" set
I've created from the Conflict Catcher menu, which puts the script in
the "Shutdown Items" folder, then restart. The script runs on
shutdown; after activating Startup Disk to set the startup system to
OS X, the script moves itself back into "Shutdown Items (Disabled)"
so that it won't launch if I quit Classic while using X. Until I
edited the script when the serial number bug was fixed in the latest
Conflict Catcher update, the script also moved CC into "Control
Panels (Disabled)".)
I wonder, considering your description, if your preference file for
the Startup
Disk control panel could be corrupted. It won't hurt anything if you dump it,
just make sure you set a startup disk selection before you restart again.
I'll give it a try.
Thanks,
Michael
