This from Jon Pugh - dateline 8/8/01 4.30 am:

What an excellent challenge. I'm a bit of a folder action junkie and make
extensive use of tabbed folders with actions attached, so this caught my
eye.

Clearly, the first obstacle to finding an ideal scripting solution is the
fact that the dimensions of pop-up windows are read-only - no problem there
if you don't mind the window 'unpopping' briefly.

A more complex issue revolves around your choice of font and font size for
views (lists and icons), as this governs the size of the grid that icons are
aligned to, and consequently the amount of window real estate required to
display a given number of rows and columns (For the record, I find that
Lucida Casual 10pt offers the perfect combination of elegance and
readability - but that's a personal thing, you may be happier with 24pt
Hobo.)

It would clearly be futile to try and write a script that detects the views
font in use and adapts itself accordingly (too many options), and attempting
to work out the grid size by reading the positions of existing icons is also
frought with imponderables. To find the perfect solution for your setup, I
think that you will need to supply information about your choice of views
font (and size), and additionally about the maximum number of icons you want
to have in any one column.

It would be a pleasure to create a script that does what you need, seeing as
Jon's Commands have been doing what I need for many years - although there
are far more experienced scripters on this list who will probably get there
first. I hope, however, that the above comments will help with the general
thrust towards a solution...
