Applescript newbie asking for advice and direction

I have been lurking on this list for a while, and have been very
impressed by what I see people are accomplishing using Applescript. I
have seen a few examples of scripts given here, and have tried entering
them on my home MAC (UMAX C600, running OS8.1), but have not had much
success. For example, there was discussion about a script that used
speech (the "say" statement). I tried entering the script exactly as it
was presented here, and received a syntax error message. It appeared to
me that the "say" statement was not a recognized function on my system.
My basic (newbie) questions are these:
1. Do I need to add more software than what comes standard with
OS8.1?
2. Is there anywhere a basic (entry level) tutorial for
Applescript?
3. Where and how does one determine the correct syntax for the
various
commands that are available? (I have looked at the
dictionaries for
various applications, but I have also seen here what appear
to be many
different ways to tell the application to do the same thing.)
I would appreciate some pointers and direction as to where to start to
break into using Applescript.
Regards,
Joe Getchel
