I also have a umax c-500 with an upgrade card running 8.6 which I would
migrate to for Applescript 1.4 or better.
I do not use it for my daily work, but I have been successful in getting up
to 8.6 on it. 9.04 seems to be the best of the systems out there, but there
are others on this list that have much more expertise in that than myself.

I suggest downloading the guidebooks for AppleScript from the apple site and
install them, they have a lot of sample scripts that will get you going
with the basics.

There is not a simple way to explain this, as it can vary from version of AS
to application specific issues.
A simple way is to start with the guidebooks from Apple, there is a great
set up there and some of the scripts they have for training in them are from
interacting with users, to complex nested if statements, and even URL/CGI
access stuff for communicating with internet apps.
