One should avoid the trap of thinking that the *first* form of regular
expressions one encounters is *the* form. They differ in many interesting
ways. Just as one tiny example,
\d
may represent the character class [0-9].
On the other hand, [[:digit:]] may represent that character class.
There are many other examples.
I certainly agree with the XML claim Scott makes.
