i just tackled generic file renaming for a client. first, there are many utilities
on VersionTracker that will do simple tasks like replacing certain characters
or adding sequence numbers to file names. maybe worth checking there unless
you are doing it as an exercise.

second, i wound up disappointed in what the above utilities could do, so
i wrote a quick droplet for a client that uses the Regular Expressions OSAX
from Script Tools (free) to handle quite a range of possible filename
transformations. the result is work product, and i don't feel like asking the
client for permission to post it, but it's a worthwhile exercise to implement.
i felt much happier with the result than if i had written a more limited
file renaming script.

this OSAX is fairly old and i've probably missed some discussion of
its pros & cons, but it worked well for me.
