There are several "automating" third party (additional cost...) solutions
for both the Mac and PC. You can use QuicKeys from CE Software and/or
MarkzScout from MarkzWare. Both are fine products, but don't offer near the
possibilities as AppleScripting. (I use QuicKeys myself, mostly with
AppleScript. Together, these two items save me an hour a day. At least)
There are probably more.
Several programs have their own "scripting" - FileMaker, Photoshop,
Illustrator, and PageMaker... Again, not nearly as encompassing as
AppleScript.
I also have "tinkered" with VB; not nearly as intuitive as AppleScript. I
gave it up and just knocked out the solutions in AppleScript.
I just installed a PHP module on my OS X computer and am intrigued by some
of the possibilities it offers. But mostly in conjunction with database and
web work....
Wherever I have worked; if they used AppleScript, they never went back or
considered getting rid of the Macs. The increased time expenditure and money
would be too much
