There are new implementations of 'file' in recent Applescript extensions.
This was documented for OS 10.1, but maybe something's changed again. i
would suggest making sure that you really have a proper string path name,
or a variable for it, set as your argument for 'open for access file' or
'open for access alias'. There are all sorts of odd things going on now. At
least in OS 10.1.1, '[alias] as string' is giving a result in international
text, which the Finder then can't use as it wants Unicode text. And so on.
