My apologies in advance, this works in OS 9.04 (and perhaps other
flavors of Classic, earlier and later):

get (path to desktop folder as string)
set AnyDesktop to result
display dialog AnyDesktop -- you don't need this, it just gives you the
answer

A lot may have changed in OS X, but it's worth a try anyway.
