The included documentation and examples on the Install CDs are great. Also
Shirley Hopkins has a book out "AppleScripting InDesign" that is top notch.
Ethan Wilde's book has chapters for both illustrator 9 and InDesign 1.5.

The Script Editor makes a big difference in learning AppleScript.

If you are in OS 9, Scripter or Scripter Personal Edition
(www.mainevent.com) is a great editor with it's "build a command" feature.
The commands may not always be correct, but they help in learning syntax.

I work in OS X and 9 and find Script Debugger a huge help, but it was
intimidating a first. Now it's all I AppleScript in.

Good Luck,
